If a family fund’s bank-account evidence is absent from the tax-award file, investigate the actual account position. Identify the legal holder, account type, bank and dates. An account used by the SFO manager is not necessarily the fund’s required account.

The 2026 MAS fund-tax circular addresses banking conditions and different award histories. Review the applicable conditions and any concession against the actual approval, rather than assuming an old setup checklist remains sufficient.
Establish whether the account exists
Distinguish an application for onboarding, preliminary acceptance, an opened account and a closed account. Obtain the relevant bank record. A relationship manager’s introductory email is not proof that the required account was established.
Check the account’s legal holder against the approved fund or structure. Related entities can have similar names. A group-wide banking presentation may not identify the account belonging to the particular fund.
Example: the office has an operating account
The SFO manager pays salaries and expenses from its operating account. Staff assume that this settles the fund’s banking condition. The tax adviser should compare the required holder and account type with the actual bank documents, rather than rely on the fact that the group banks in Singapore.
Prepare a banking evidence schedule
- Fund and approved entity names.
- Account holder and account type.
- Bank and relevant regulatory status.
- Opening date and period maintained.
- Closures, transfers or material changes.
- Condition, deadline or concession being assessed.
Keep confidential account numbers and statements appropriately restricted. A compliance index can identify the evidence without giving every staff member access to the entire banking file.
Match the evidence to the award history
Retrieve the original award, changes and official correspondence. Identify whether the condition being reviewed applies to a new award, an existing award or an approved structure. Do not apply one vehicle’s account evidence to every fund automatically.
If a concession is relevant, calculate its actual period from the official documents. Avoid describing an indefinite intention to open an account as compliance with a time-limited condition.
Resolve a gap without disguising it
Where onboarding is incomplete, establish the outstanding bank requirements and realistic timing. Give the adviser accurate information about the delay and seek official clarification where necessary. Do not create an account-opening confirmation that the bank has not issued.
If the account was closed or moved, preserve the chronology and new documents. A current account does not necessarily prove the required arrangement existed during an earlier period.
Keep banking changes on the review calendar
Notify the person responsible for the award before material banking changes. A commercial decision to consolidate accounts should be reviewed for its incentive consequences. Retain the resulting assessment with the fund’s records.
Does a banking relationship prove an account is open?
No. Check the actual account-opening evidence and legal holder.
Can one account satisfy every fund vehicle’s condition?
Review the relevant scheme, structure and approval. Do not assume it.
