Your Supplier Grants a Prompt-Payment Discount: Adjust the GST Claim from the Credit Note

White calculator on a desk

If your company earns a supplier’s prompt-payment discount, reconcile the credit note with the original tax invoice and any input GST already claimed. Paying a smaller amount does not justify leaving the original tax claim untouched. Keep evidence that the payment met the discount terms and check the supplier’s adjustment before closing the payable.

Distinguish an upfront price reduction from a conditional discount

A normal sales discount reduces the agreed selling price. A prompt-payment discount depends on meeting stated payment conditions. Establish which arrangement the supplier offered and whether your payment satisfied it. Do not rely on the short description in a bank transfer.

What does current IRAS guidance require?

IRAS explains that, from 1 April 2020, the discounted GST treatment for prompt payment applies when the customer fulfils the terms. The supplier must issue a credit note reducing the taxable value and GST on its initial invoice. A GST-registered customer that claimed the original invoice’s GST must reduce its input-tax claim accordingly.

Example: payment arrives before the agreed cut-off

A supplier offers a discount if cleared payment arrives by a stated date. Your finance team pays early and receives a credit note. Match the credit note to the invoice, check its taxable value and GST, and record the actual payment. A smaller bank debit alone does not show whether the supplier accepted the condition as fulfilled.

Build a complete adjustment file

Use a clear reference so the same credit note is not processed once by accounts payable and again by the tax preparer.

What if the supplier has not issued the credit note?

Request it and ask the accountant how to handle the affected return correctly. Do not create a document pretending to be the supplier’s credit note. If the supplier says an alternative arrangement applies, obtain its explanation and supporting basis for review.

Keep commercial disputes separate from tax records

If the supplier disputes whether payment was on time, preserve the contract and payment trail. Record the disputed balance transparently. An unexplained write-off may hide both a payable disagreement and an incorrect tax adjustment.

Can we keep the original GST claim because the invoice was valid?

A later qualifying credit note can require an adjustment even though the original invoice was valid.

Is this the same as a refund for cancelled services?

No. Identify the actual reason for the reduction and apply the corresponding treatment.
