A business owner planning a family move while GIP is pending should review each person’s current immigration position. A planned investment, pending application or expected PR outcome does not automatically authorise the family’s entry, stay, employment or study.
Raffles Corporate Services works with a panel of experienced Singapore law firms who offer cost-effective and efficient legal service and advice. This article is general information only and is not legal advice.
Use the current EDB programme guidance for the GIP process and the appropriate ICA or MOM requirements for present arrangements. These are related plans with separate official steps.
Create an individual family schedule
List the applicant, spouse, children and any other relatives moving. Record nationality, passport validity, current permission, proposed arrival and purpose. Do not treat the family as one immigration case when members have different needs.
Identify what is confirmed and what remains an application or intention. Keep official letters and issued documents with the dates they actually show.
Example: school plans precede the immigration outcome
A family arranges a child’s school place while the parent’s GIP application is still being assessed. Review the child’s own entry and study requirements with the relevant institution and official authorities. A school offer is not itself an issued immigration pass.
Separate work from residence planning
If the business owner or spouse expects to work, assess the proper authorisation for the actual employer and activity. Company ownership and incorporation do not alone establish permission to work.
If the family intends only a temporary visit while preparing the move, review entry and stay conditions. Do not assume a visit arrangement allows the same activities as an issued work or residence pass.
Check the pending application’s actual scope
- Who is included in the application.
- Who needs a separate present arrangement.
- Documents or declarations outstanding.
- Current pass and passport expiries.
- Relevant work or study plans.
- Contingency if the outcome is delayed or refused.
Use the actual application and current requirements to assess family eligibility. Do not promise that every relative can obtain the same status through the main applicant.
Plan commercial commitments around uncertainty
Review lease, school and employment commitments for the consequences of a delayed move. Consider flexible dates and actual contractual terms. An adviser’s estimated processing time should not be treated as an official guaranteed date.
Keep a budget and practical alternative for lawful stay, departure or later relocation. Avoid allowing a current pass to expire while relying only on a hoped-for new outcome.
Carry through the official outcome
After approval, complete the prescribed formalities for each relevant applicant. ICA’s PR guidance distinguishes the approval stage from fulfilling the conditions for status. Preserve the actual completion evidence.
Tell the relevant employer, school or institution accurate status information. Do not describe the family as PRs before the necessary steps are complete.
Does a pending GIP application extend every family member’s stay?
Do not assume that. Review the actual permission and expiry for each person.
Can company incorporation settle the spouse’s work permission?
No. Assess the actual employment and work-authorisation route separately.
