Creating Shareholder Value Isn’t Complicated , It’s Just These 3 Levers

The 3 Levers That Drive Shareholder Value

Every founder or management team says they want to create shareholder value.

But if you ask them how they plan to do it, you’ll often hear vague answers — “grow revenue,” “expand market share,” “go digital.”

In reality, there are only three ways to create shareholder value. Everything else is just a variation of one of these levers:

1️⃣ Make customers want to pay more.
2️⃣ Charge more.
3️⃣ Spend less to deliver the same thing.

This idea comes from Harvard Business School professor Felix Oberholzer-Gee, who calls it the Value Stick — a simple, powerful way to see how value moves between customers, employees, and shareholders.

1. Increase perceived value (a.k.a. willingness to pay)

People pay more when they believe they’re getting more.
That “more” could be:

Think of Apple. The cost to make an iPhone isn’t five times higher than a mid-range Android. Yet customers believe it’s worth more — thanks to its design, ecosystem, and brand promise.

Or take Starbucks. Coffee beans cost cents, but customers pay $5 for consistency, comfort, and brand experience. That’s perceived value in action.

In our firm, we noticed clients didn’t just want their books done — they wanted clarity. So we started adding short, plain-English summaries explaining what their numbers meant. Same report, same data, but suddenly, clients felt the service was more valuable.

That’s the first lever in action: increasing what customers perceive they’re getting.

2. Charge a higher price

If customers genuinely value what you offer, you can capture more of that value by raising prices.

Netflix does this every few years. Some users complain, but most stay — because they feel the content is worth it. That’s pricing power, and it’s what turns a good product into a great business.

We went through this too. Early on, our accounting packages were priced to compete. But over time, we realised clients weren’t choosing us because we were cheaper — they valued the advice and responsiveness we provided.

When we adjusted our prices to reflect that, we didn’t lose clients; we gained ones who valued our clarity and support.

That’s the second lever: when customers see real value, they’re willing to pay a fair price.

A quick test for yourself:

“If I raised my price by 10%, would my customers still feel happy paying it?”

If yes, you’re probably undercharging for your value.

3. Lower your cost to serve

This is the most straightforward — and often the most overlooked — lever.
Delivering the same value for less cost improves margins instantly.

Ryanair built an empire on this principle: no-frills flights, quick turnaround times, and direct online sales. Customers know exactly what they’re getting, and shareholders benefit from efficiency.

In our case, automating parts of our reporting process saved hours of manual reconciliation every month. The output stayed the same — but it freed up our team to focus on helping clients interpret their results instead of formatting them.

That’s the third lever: reducing the cost to serve without compromising the client experience.

Why this matters for SME owners

You don’t need a big strategy team to think like Apple or Netflix.
You just need clarity on which lever you’re pulling:

The next time you review your numbers, frame your discussion around these three levers. You’ll be surprised how much clearer strategy becomes.

Takeaway:

Every successful business grows by shifting one of three things — what customers value, what they pay, or what it costs to serve them.

I find this framework useful whenever I review my own firm’s financials — it keeps strategy simple, grounded, and focused on what truly drives value.
