Before asking customers to pay into a long-unused corporate account, confirm its actual status with the bank. Inactive, restricted and closed accounts should not be treated as identical.

Use the bank’s verified channel and obtain the requirements for the specific account.
Establish the account’s status
Check official notices, permitted transactions and any outstanding information requests. Ask who is authorised to obtain or act on the account information.
An old account statement or saved payee screen does not prove the account can currently receive and use funds.
Example: a customer is about to pay an old invoice
The invoice names an account the company has not used for years. Confirm the status before telling the customer to proceed. If instructions must change, use a verified process to reduce confusion and payment-redirection risk.
Prepare the reactivation review
- Account identity and verified company ownership.
- Current directors, signatories and authority.
- Bank notices and outstanding requests.
- Current business activity and expected transactions.
- Required forms and supporting documents.
- Bank confirmation of the actual outcome.
MAS’s AML overview includes regular account reviews among financial-institution controls. Provide truthful current information instead of assuming old onboarding remains sufficient indefinitely.
Distinguish an application from restored access
Follow the bank’s process and retain its response. A completed form does not establish that a restriction has been removed.
Review internet-banking access and payment authority separately where relevant. Do not use a former director’s credentials simply because current access is inconvenient.
Update customer and accounting records carefully
Once the actual position is confirmed, reconcile pending receipts and any returned payments. Notify customers through an appropriate verified business channel where instructions need correction.
If a new account is required, keep the old account’s closing history and balances clear. Do not lose records needed for tax, accounts or disputes.
Can the company test an uncertain account with customer money?
Obtain the bank’s position first.
Does submitting reactivation paperwork prove success?
No. Verify the actual bank outcome.
