If a company has already missed a filing deadline, do not assume changing its financial year end can erase the breach. Review the recorded reporting period and the actual overdue obligation first.

ACRA’s FYE guidance says the FYE cannot be changed where the deadlines for the AGM, annual return or sending financial statements have been missed. Obtain advice on the proper way to address the current position.
Establish what is overdue
Collect the recorded FYE, statements, circulation or meeting records, previous filing outcomes and official notices. Compare the facts with the applicable deadlines.
A reminder email may identify only one missing task. Check whether other linked obligations also need attention.
Example: the proposed extension is entered only internally
A founder changes the accounting spreadsheet from June to December after the June-period deadline has passed. That does not establish an accepted official FYE change. Reconcile the actual company record and explain the discrepancy to the advisers.
Prepare an accurate remediation list
- The affected entity and financial period.
- Each missed obligation and official notice.
- Documents still needed for completion.
- Responsible directors and advisers.
- Any appropriate official application or response.
- Submission outcome and remaining follow-up.
Keep a proposed application separate from an approved result. Avoid promising that a late filing will attract only one fixed consequence without reviewing the facts.
Preserve the real chronology
Do not backdate circulation, minutes or approvals to make the file appear timely. Establish which events genuinely occurred and obtain advice about the required corrections.
If the company has a summons or enforcement correspondence, address its specific instructions and dates promptly. Completing accounts does not itself answer a court notice.
Plan future alignment prospectively
After addressing the current position, ask whether a lawful future FYE change is appropriate. Review the applicable restrictions and effects on accounting and tax periods before making the decision.
Update every adviser’s calendar only once the actual outcome is clear. Retain both the old and new reporting history so future staff can follow the transition.
Does an internal accounting-period change alter ACRA’s record?
No. Check the proper official process and outcome.
Can a new FYE replace a late-filing remediation plan?
Do not assume that. Address the actual missed obligations.
