If an accounting migration reveals an error in a previously filed tax return, preserve the evidence and obtain tax advice promptly. Correcting the new ledger does not itself correct an earlier return.

Establish the actual error, affected periods and discovery sequence before deciding the appropriate disclosure or correction route.
Separate migration differences from original errors
Reconcile opening balances, source transactions and earlier tax computations. A migration mapping problem may differ from an expense or income item incorrectly reported in the original return.
Keep the old export and the new system records so the accountant can explain the difference.
Example: duplicate expenses affected a return
The new system review identifies invoices recorded twice before a tax filing. Trace which amounts were actually deducted in the computation. A duplicated ledger item does not prove the same amount affected tax if an earlier adjustment removed it.
Build the disclosure assessment pack
- Original returns, computations and assessments.
- Transactions and reconciliation supporting the error.
- Affected years and estimated tax effect.
- Discovery date and review chronology.
- Relevant IRAS queries or audit notices.
- Proposed correction and supporting explanation.
IRAS’s VDP guidance requires accurate, complete, timely and self-initiated disclosure, with cooperation and payment or honoured payment arrangements. Check eligibility on the facts.
Do not promise automatic penalty relief
The timing and qualifying conditions matter. Ask the tax adviser to assess the actual return, applicable programme and any relevant official contact already received.
Do not omit related errors simply to present a smaller or more favourable disclosure. Provide a supportable and complete explanation.
Track the official correction outcome
Use the appropriate service for the affected tax and retain acknowledgements, correspondence, revised assessments and payment outcomes. An acknowledgement is not necessarily the final tax conclusion.
Update the control that caused the error and retain the reconciliation for future reviews.
Does correcting the accounting system fix the filed tax return?
No. Review the official correction required.
