A Company Owner Applies for PR: Separate Business Income from Personal Earnings

Singapore waterfront and business district

A company owner preparing a PR application should distinguish the company’s turnover from personal earnings. Identify salary, director payments, dividends and other receipts accurately, and connect each figure to supporting records.

The ICA document checklist distinguishes employment evidence from documents for self-employed applicants. Owning shares does not, by itself, determine which description accurately fits the applicant’s working arrangement.

Explain the applicant’s actual capacity

Record the legal employer, role, shareholding and working arrangement. A person can own shares and also hold employment, but those facts should be described consistently. Review the applicable category and requirements rather than choosing the label that appears most advantageous.

Company incorporation and an immigration application are separate processes. The official PR eligibility guidance should be reviewed for the applicant’s actual circumstances; forming a company does not guarantee residence.

Example: strong turnover, modest personal salary

A business has substantial sales, while the owner draws a smaller salary and leaves cash in the company. The application should not present the entire sales figure as the owner’s personal income. Provide the business figures in their proper context and separately support the salary or other personal receipts.

Prepare an income reconciliation

Check that the figures cover the periods requested. A year’s revenue, a month’s salary and a one-off dividend should not be added together without identifying their different periods and nature.

Do not confuse transfers with earnings

A payment from the company to the owner may settle an expense claim, repay a loan or represent another transaction. Trace the entry and documents before describing it as income. A bank statement alone may not establish what the transfer represents.

If the company’s books are incomplete, reconcile them before relying on a management summary. Avoid recreating payroll or dividend records that do not reflect genuine transactions.

Keep business progress factual

Where business activity is relevant, use actual contracts, operations and financial records. Label projections as projections. Do not present a proposed deal as completed revenue or claim future jobs already exist.

Provide the company’s information only in the form and scope required or relevant to the application. Keep client-sensitive details restricted where a less intrusive supporting document can accurately explain the fact.

Review the final file as one account

The application, employment letter, financial statements and personal evidence should tell a consistent factual story. Ask the accountant to explain financial classifications and seek immigration advice on the applicable requirements. No adviser can convert a particular turnover figure into a guaranteed PR outcome.

Is company revenue the owner’s income?

No. Distinguish the company’s earnings and transactions from the owner’s personal receipts.

Does a shareholder always apply as self-employed?

Review the actual arrangement and applicable requirements. Share ownership alone is not a complete description of the person’s work.
